Separation after just one season: Borussia Dortmund throws Marco Rose out

Borussia Dortmund throws Marco Rose out

Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund and coach Marco Rose are splitting up again after just one season together. Rose had led the team to second place in the Bundesliga, but the runners-up were particularly disappointing in the cup competitions.

Marco Rose is no longer the coach of Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund. “This day is not an easy one for any of us, because mutual respect was, is and will be great. After a season that was unsatisfactory for various reasons, we had to realize that we didn’t get the most out of our opportunities in many areas “, Managing Director Hans-Joachim Watzke is quoted in a club announcement. The club and the coach, who had moved from Borussia Mönchengladbach to Dortmund with great fanfare before the season that had just ended, ended the brief collaboration after just eleven months.

“Despite a difficult season with many imponderables, I was convinced of our path. During our conversation, I got the impression that the one hundred percent conviction of all those responsible is no longer there. Ultimately, we therefore decided together to end the cooperation”, said Rose, who had led Borussia Dortmund to the runners-up championship, but produced bitter disappointments with his team, especially in the cup competitions. In the Champions League they had already failed in the group phase, in the Europa League they were already in the playoffs for the round of 16 and in the cup the team around the often injured superstar Erling Haaland failed in the quarter-finals at second division club FC St. Pauli.

Too many goals against

Matthias Sammer, the club’s former master coach and now involved as a consultant in the season analysis that ultimately led to the separation, announced on Wednesday that he felt “great anticipation about the future. But the next development step has to come next year: one higher stability, fewer fluctuations, fewer goals conceded.” In the Bundesliga it rained against goals, in the end there were 52 – by far the most of all top teams and only one more than relegated Arminia Bielefeld. 86 self-scored goals – a club record – were so far too few to seriously endanger champions Bayern Munich.

After the step, which was surprising despite the unsatisfactory season, the club announced that they would start talks about the composition of the future coaching team in the coming days. “I can clearly say that I’m planning the season with Marco,” said license director Kehl at the beginning of May. It turned out differently. In the spring of 2021, Rose had caused serious trouble for the Bundesliga competitor with his announcement that he was leaving Borussia Mönchengladbach for Dortmund after only two years. Now the commitment of the former Bundesliga player, for whom BVB had paid five million euros, is involuntarily ending prematurely.

This makes Borussia Dortmund the next Bundesliga club to start looking for a new coach for the coming season. Previously, VfL Wolfsburg (Florian Kohfeldt), Borussia Mönchengladbach (Adi Hütter) and TSG Hoffenheim (Sebastian Hoeneß) had separated from their executives, Markus Weinzierl announced his departure from FC Augsburg of his own accord.
