September event with question marks: Will Apple introduce the iPhone 12 on Tuesday?

Apple is hosting a virtual event on September 15th. Normally, Tim Cook and Co. should present the new iPhone 12, but nothing is normal in the Corona year – not even at Apple.

When Apple invites you to an event on a Tuesday in September, you don't really have to be an insider to know that new iPhones are being presented. But the Corona crisis is not leaving Apple without a trace and it is generally assumed that the devices will not be on the market before October. Apple expert Mark Gurman from "Bloomberg" even expects the iPhone 12 series to not even be presented on September 15th. Instead, Apple should plan another show next month. But what will the company show next Tuesday?

Apple Watch 6 and iPad Air 4

In fact, the invitation already indicates that the Apple Watch will be the focus of the event. "Time flies" – "time flies" – it says. An AR Easter egg is also hidden in the graphic on the event website. You can see it when you visit the website with an iPhone or iPad and tap the event logo. It then dissolves and meanders to the date of the event.

The clear reference to augmented reality actually speaks in favor of an iPhone concept, as it is said that at least the Pro models are equipped with lidar sensors. And these provide in-depth information for AR tasks. However, augmented reality also plays an important role in iPads. In addition to the sixth Apple Watch series, Gurman is also expecting the fourth generation of the iPad Air, now with an almost borderless display like the Pro models.

Apple may also use the September event to present more devices. This could include over-ear headphones and a smaller HomePod. Perhaps there are also more details about the first Mac computer that will run with Apple's first own ARM chip.

What if Apple does show iPhones?

It is not impossible that Tim Cook and his team will present the upcoming iPhones. To show the devices now and to start pre-orders shortly would not be too risky for a market launch in October – this is more the norm with other manufacturers. The iPhone 12 series will not be a big surprise anyway, too much is already known.

According to "EverythingApplePro", the iPhone 12 series could look like this.

Since December, this year, not just three, but four different iPhone variants have been expected. Strictly speaking, there are even five, because in April Apple presented the new iPhone SE. The iPhone 12 Pro is said to have a 6.1-inch display, the iPhone 12 Pro Max a huge 6.7-inch screen.

There are also probably two models with 6.1 and 5.4 inch panels. As the iPhone 11 successor, they should be more simply equipped, but have OLED displays like the Pro variants. But only the more expensive models can be expected to have a higher refresh rate of 120 Hertz. The cheaper devices should also have aluminum frames, while the Pro models are sheathed with steel.

Angular design for 5G?

Since not much has changed visually with the current devices, a significantly changed design is expected for the 12 series. It is expected to be very reminiscent of the iPhone 4 / 4S with its wide, flat metal frame. The changed design could be due to the fact that all new iPhones should be 5G-capable and the antennas can be better distributed in the flat frame.

The Pro models can in all probability snap through three different lenses like the current devices. Your lidar sensors should also support the autofocus when taking night shots. The simpler variants are likely to have only two rear cameras and no lidar sensors.
