One day before the start of the Australian Open, Novak Djokovic failed to appeal against the cancellation of the visa. A look back at the legal impasse:

The deadline for applying for an exemption to participate in the Australian Open is ending – for players who have not been vaccinated against the corona virus. Only fully vaccinated people are allowed to start.

The unvaccinated Djokovic attends a Serbian Post event in his home country. In the evening he finds out about his infection. The positive PCR result is in documents that his lawyers later submit to the Australian authorities. According to the rules in Serbia, Covid positives who do not have severe symptoms must be isolated at home for 14 days.

  • Novak Djokovic has to leave Australia.

  • A court decided that.

  • On Twitter, opinions differ widely.

  • The Serbian politician and the media in Djokovic’s home country are fuming.

The decision has been made, the verdict is there. Novak Djokovic is not allowed to take part in the Australian Open and has to leave the country. As the federal court in Australia ruled on Sunday, the Serbian tennis pro’s appeal against his denied entry and the annulment of the visa was rejected.

The decision was unanimous, said the three judges James Allsop, Anthony Besanko and David O’Callaghan. The reasoning? This should be done on Monday at the earliest. Neither side can appeal the judgment before the federal court. And the world number 1 in tennis doesn’t want that at all. However, he will accept the court’s decision and cooperate with the responsible authorities for his departure, said Djokovic. But he also says: “I am extremely disappointed with the decision.”

The mockery is huge

There has been a huge uproar on social media since the final verdict. Many users scoff at the Serbs. Someone writes: “Today Australia celebrates Ascension Day” and posts a picture of Jesus ascending to heaven. With his post he is probably addressing the remarkable press conference at which Djokovic’s father compared his son to Jesus Christ and said: “Jesus was crucified, everything was done to him and he endured and he still lives among us” And: “Try now to crucify Novak in the same way and do everything to him.”

For others, too, the ridicule prevails. «Ok, Djokovic has to leave Australia, consistently and correctly, rules have to apply to everyone. The only thing that is unclear is whether Jesus will walk on water or hover?” asks one jokingly. Or: “Actually shameful how much attention this kindergarten around Djokovic was given.” But there are also those who address Australia’s brutal immigration policy and think that Djokovic really shouldn’t complain. “Compared to citizens, some of whom could not enter the country for months, or asylum seekers, Djokovic was treated with kid gloves,” said one user.

“Can’t wait for him to return to Serbia”

The tennis superstar is also protected by some of the users. Someone says: “Whoever does not bend will be punished. A dangerous message: This is how governments are deliberately aggravating the already critical situation and provoking social unrest.” Many Twitter users are simply stunned by the decision. So did Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.

In interviews with the Serbian media, he foams: “Australia now thinks that it has humiliated Djokovic with this ten-day harassment. The country has humiliated itself. The trial was a farce. The court and the prosecutor spread lies. The process, it was absolutely meaningless.” Then he turns to the Australian people and thanks: “I thank the Australian people, I’m sure they love Novak. I can’t wait for Novak to come back to Serbia. We will welcome him with open arms.” The Serbian media, which are also pissed off, blow the same horn.

The “Kurir” writes, for example, of “the greatest pity in the history of sport”. Alo.rs says: «A disgrace like you’ve never seen it before! Djokovic will be deported, he will not play at the Australian Open.” The information platform Informer.rs is just shaken. And the community of 20 minutes? She agrees. And how! According to a survey (as of Sunday morning, ten a.m.), over 90 percent agree with the court decision.
