(Reuters) – Russia’s foreign minister said on Tuesday that Britain’s new prime minister, Liz Truss, has no culture of compromise and joked about her already strained relationship with Emmanuel Macron.

Speaking at a press conference in Moscow, Sergei Lavrov said the approach of the conservative leader, who until now served as foreign secretary, would not help Britain on the international stage.

It tries to “defend the interests of Britain without taking into account the positions of others in any way and without any attempt to compromise”, he claimed.

“I don’t think it will help Britain maintain or strengthen its position on the international stage, which has clearly been shaken after its exit from the European Union,” he added.

Sergey Lavrov further expressed surprise at Liz Truss’ budding relationship with French President Emmanuel Macron, after she said she didn’t know if he was a “friend” or an “enemy”.

“For Liz Truss (…) it should be a priority to deal with her closest neighbors, including finally deciding whether President Macron is her friend or her enemy. This question is still unresolved”, a-t- it belongs.

Britain has been one of the countries most committed to supporting Ukraine and its President Volodimir Zelensky since the invasion of Russia on February 24.
