At the time of digesting the plethoric feast offered by the Lille event, dominates an almost vertiginous feeling of a feverish creation in form and pessimistic in its stories. A contemporary snapshot diffracted between violence and rebirth.

We know the series’ exceptional responsiveness to current events, made possible by its industry and often embraced by those who make it. Series Mania has made it the motto of this 2022 edition, organized just six months after that of 2021: “The series watch the world.” Worry, if we can say so, the world has brutally slipped – again – with the war in Ukraine, which, without making obsolete any story of the myriad that have begun to be told in the thirty series chosen in the four selections (international competition, international panorama, French competition and short format competition), places us in a strange gap with them. The Ukrainian producer Julia Sinkevych, invited in extremis by the director Laurence Herszberg at the head of the international jury, conceded it herself to Freed on the first day of the festival, she who left the war and who will return there as soon as it is over, and feels in Lille as split: this edition is surreal.

But by a miracle that belongs only to the creators, many of the stories seen deal less with a present canceled by the split made by the news between the world before and the world after – like the pandemic. , of which we still see so little in the…
