The brazen crooks didn’t expect that: Together with a bank employee who reacted correctly, an 83-year-old Tyrolean woman outwitted fraudsters who wanted to steal large sums of money from her using the “deposit trick”.
On Friday around 1:30 p.m., the local from the greater Innsbruck area received a call from a fake police officer who said, “The police are here,” saying that her daughter had caused a serious traffic accident. A woman was killed. The phone was then briefly handed over to a crying woman. When the 83-year-old stated that she did not have a daughter, the matter was diverted to her daughter-in-law, who would have to be imprisoned unless a deposit amounting to a mid-five-figure euro amount was paid. Crooks also wanted gold. The victim then agreed to pay the deposit and had to go to the bank, in constant telephone contact with the fraudster, to withdraw the money. The unknown perpetrator directed the conversation to other assets and also demanded the return of the requested gold investments amounting to a low five-digit euro amount. After the woman was instructed not to inform anyone and not to interrupt telephone contact, she entered the bank branch with the telephone switched on, which she kept in her purse. When the 83-year-old was asked by the bank employee whether she would like to withdraw money, she signaled to the bank employee with her finger to her lips to be quiet. Police notified The attentive and correctly reacting bank employee then asked the 83-year-old to go into her own room office without addressing the matter and called the police in another office via an emergency call. This prevented the handover of the mid-five-figure euro amount to the unscrupulous crooks. Series of calls That day was not the only attempt by unknown perpetrators to steal money in Tyrol using the bail or police trick. There is no trace of the crooks.
