Three lawyers announced on Monday the complaints to come from a dozen patients. They suffer from “sometimes serious and potentially irreversible” side effects.

A series of complaints should be filed in the week in Paris by a dozen patients targeting “unintentional injuriesThat would have been caused by antibiotics prescribed without authorisation, three lawyers announced on Monday in a press release.

Me Noémie Klein, Maxime Bailly and Martin Vettes represent the interests of Philippe Coville, who already filed a complaint last October, and of a “ten other patients” Who “have taken fluoroquinolone antibiotics and suffer from sometimes serious and potentially irreversible side effects“.

According to these tips, despite several alerts on their dangerousness, in particular from Mr. Coville, and the restrictions of indications that came in late in 2019 with regard to their adverse effects known for years, these antibiotics are still massively prescribed today outside the scope of the marketing authorization (AMM)“. A number of these patientsconsider that they were not informed both of the off-label prescription of the antibiotic that was issued to them but also of the adverse effects they began to suffer from after their consumption“, write the lawyers again.

Centralize investigations

All of these patients hope through these complaints to “unintentional injuries” And “aggravated deception“obtain the opening of an investigation by the public health department of the Paris court”to centralize investigations“, while the first complaint of Mr. Coville, filed in Paris, was according to one of the advice disoriented with the judicial court of Versailles.

On its website, the National Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM) indicates that “fluoroquinolones are a class of antibiotics that can be used in serious bacterial infections“. “Like all medicines, fluoroquinolones can cause side effects“, warns the ANSM, evoking “nervous system damage“, of the “neuro-psychiatric disorders», «a disorder of the musculoskeletal system“, but also “very rare but serious cardiac side effects“.

Since 2018-2019, the European Medicines Agency “re-evaluated” their “benefit/risk ratio“, leading in particular “restrict their therapeutic indications and update their safety profile“recalls the ANSM. On its website, the national agency indicates that fluoroquinolones “should only be prescribed after carefully weighing their benefits against the expected risks of adverse effects, and after informing the patient“.
