It is a setback for the Federal Council and the Swiss negotiators: The EU does not want to grant Switzerland a unilateral protective clause regarding the free movement of people. Ursula von der Leyen told Viola Amherd this on Tuesday. A unilateral safeguard clause is not acceptable for the EU. This was first reported by Blick. SRF also has several sources that confirm the information.

However, the negotiations continue. The 27 member states of the European Union want a solution to the free movement of people without a unilateral protective clause – the goal is still to conclude negotiations with Bern by the end of the year.

The EU member states will probably reassess the Switzerland-EU question on October 15th.
