Players of the French men’s handball team tested positive for Covid-19 while they were together in preparation for the European Championship in mid-January. Only thirteen players were able to start the internship while waiting for the coach to summon others.

Several players from the French men’s handball team gathered in preparation for the European championship which begins on January 13 have tested positive for Covid, the French handball federation announced on Sunday.

A strict health protocol

“All the players and staff members called for this camp from December 26th to 30th were subjected to a very strict protocol. A first test carried out on Friday 24th then a second on Sunday December 26th, upon their arrival at the Maison du handball , made it possible to detect several positive cases for Covid-19 while all the actors were placed in solitary confinement, “said a press release.

“Rémi Desbonnet, Hugo Descat, Aymeric Minne, Dylan Nahi and Élohim Prandi are not suitable for this first preparation module”, says the same source, and will have to wait to perform a negative PCR test to replay with their club and / or with the France team.

13 players to start the course

There are therefore thirteen players who started the internship, coach Guillaume Gilles now having to designate others to complete his squad. He must already do without the services of Nedim Remili, the center-half of the Blues, gold medalists at the Tokyo Olympics. His club, PSG, announced Thursday his package for Euro-2022 due to a broken foot.

Three other players must also miss this first step towards the Euro handball which is to be held from January 13 to 30 in Hungary. They are Nikola Karabatic, Benoît Kounkoud and Yanis Lenne, also tested positive for Covid. Goalkeeper Vincent Gérard, “touched by a family tragedy”, will not be able to participate in this first course either, the Federation said Thursday.
