Several dozen victims in a landslide in Malaysia

BATANG KALI, Malaysia (Reuters) – A landslide that occurred overnight from Thursday to Friday at a campsite near Malaysia’s capital Kuala Lumpur left at least 16 people dead and more than 20 missing, emergency services said .

The disaster occurred around 3:00 a.m. (7:00 p.m. GMT Thursday) in Batang Kali, in a famous tourist region about fifty kilometers north of the Malaysian capital.

The cause of the landslide was not immediately determined. The region did not experience heavy rain overnight and no earthquakes were recorded.

The earth collapsed from a height of about thirty meters, covering nearly half a hectare, said the relief. Nearly 400 rescuers were dispatched to the scene.
