Several goals were denied: eager Cologne residents hold back the people from Leipzig

Several goals were denied
Zealous people from Cologne stop the people from turning up in Leipzig

1. FC Köln takes the lead several times, the goals do not count several times. Until Anthony Modeste scored the opening goal. The runner-up of the previous season, RB Leipzig, then turns up. But nothing follows the equalization. The final phase is dramatically open.

No more clap for RB Leipzig – but also no liberation. The soccer runner-up has stopped its recent rapid downward trend, but in a wild duel at 1. FC Köln, coach Jesse Marsch’s team did not get past a 1: 1 (0: 0). With only four counters, RB continues to lag behind his claims in 13th place.

1.FC Cologne – RB Leipzig 1: 1 (0: 0)

Cologne: Timo Horn – Schmitz (82nd Salih Özcan), Kilian, Czichos (31st Mere), Hector – Skhiri – Ljubicic, Duda, Thielmann (82nd Schindler) – Modeste (68th Andersson), Uth (68th Ehizibue). – Trainer: Baumgart

Leipzig: Gulacsi – Klostermann, Orban, Simakan, Gvardiol – Haidara (85th Adams), Kampl – Nkunku, Szoboszlai (90th + 3 Laimer) – Silva (57th Poulsen), Olmo (57th Forsberg). – Trainer: March

Referee: Felix Brych (Munich)

Gates: 1: 0 Modeste (53rd, according to video evidence), 1: 1 Haidara (71st)

Referee Felix Brych checked a goal by video evidence four times, including the Cologne leadership by Anthony Modeste (56th) – it was already the fourth goal of the season for the French. Amadou Haidara (71.) scored a little later to equalize.

“It was just a great football game,” enthused Cologne coach Baumgart, who was satisfied with the point: “It could have turned out differently, but I’m happy.” His opponent said: “We should have won this game, but it will come,” said Marsch. “We’re in a difficult phase, but I believe in the team.”

After three defeats in a row, including the violent bankruptcies against Bayern Munich (1: 4) and at Manchester City (3: 6), Leipzig at least scored again. But the Cologne team are better than the title candidate, with eight points, coach Steffen Baumgart’s team is sixth for the time being.

His team had “learned a lot” from their recent defeats, Marsch had said, “we are disappointed”, but the level was also high – he saw the great opportunity in Cologne: “We can find our rhythm here and now.”

Both tours would be possible

And his team did a lot for it. Although the Cologne attacked aggressively as always under Baumgart, RB was much more dangerous at the beginning. Dominik Szoboszlai scored in the fifth minute, but was just offside, and the rhythm continued.

Christopher Nkunku’s shot hit the post (8th), then Timo Horn had to defuse the Cologne goal in quick succession against Nkunku (14th) and Szoboszlai (17th). Leipzig could have led long ago – but so did Cologne. Ondrej Duda’s volley landed on the crossbar after just eleven minutes.

The number of big chances now decreased somewhat, but the very fast game continued to slosh up and down, the Cologne team met next: Mark Uth completed, but preparer Modeste had been sidelined (37th).

The second half began like the first, but with the opposite sign: FC pressed and came up with opportunities every minute. Duda’s shot was defused (48th), Modestes header missed (49th), then his offside goal was whistled – and the lead should not count at first: Brych saw a foul in the making, but he saw it when studying the video images no longer.

Only now did RB find their way back into the game and dominance. Substitute Emil Forsberg (67th) scored, the whistle was blown back here too, but there was nothing to complain about Haidara’s header. It remained a fast-paced game with numerous opportunities.
