Severe storms can occur in the south-west and north of Germany. The German Weather Service (DWD) has therefore declared the second highest warning level for some areas.

The week has it all: heat, heavy rain, thunderstorms, hail and storms. Especially today it can be in the southwest and north become dangerous for Germany. The German Weather Service (DWD) has therefore declared the second highest warning level for some regions.

Thunderstorm super cell over NRW

In North Rhine-Westphalia in particular, storm “Denis” coming from the Benelux countries and heading towards the North Sea is causing a severe change in the weather.

The first effects can already be felt. The second highest warning level of the German Weather Service has been in effect for the region around Cologne since the morning. There are also warnings of a thunderstorm super cell that has been moving across North Rhine-Westphalia since late Friday morning. In the border region between Belgium and Germany, this has already caused more than 10,000 lightning bolts, reports the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger.

Super cell causes squalls, hail and heavy rain

In addition to strong thunderstorms with heavy rain of up to 50 l/sqm in a short time, hail and gusts of wind of up to 95 km/h, there can be local storms with heavy rain of 25-50 l/sqm within an hour, severe gusts of wind of 95 km /h and in some areas hurricane-force gusts of up to 110 km/h. Even tornadoes are occasionally not excluded. Heavy thunderstorms over Cologne and the region must be expected again and again into the evening hours, which will then gradually disappear on Saturday night.

Severe weather warning also for northern Germany

Strong thunderstorms are also expected in northern Germany during the course of the day. The DWD warns of locally stormy gusts of around 70 km/h and small-grain hail. There is a risk of storms in some areas due to heavy rain with precipitation of more than 25 l/sqm, hail of two centimeters and heavy gusts of wind of around 90 km/h. Occasionally, hurricane-like gusts of around 110 km/h and individual tornadoes cannot be ruled out. The thunderstorm activity will decrease in intensity on Saturday, but strong thunderstorms with heavy rainfall can still occur on the coast.
