A cover protects our favorite book from dirt and co. We show you how you can sew a simple book cover – without any pattern.

On vacation, on the way to work or just like that: books are quickly affected – one Cover protects our favorite book on the other hand from dirt and Co. A self-made book cover is also a nice present for friends and family (with or without a book ?)! We'll show you how you can sew one yourself without a pattern. Also suitable for beginners!

Sewing the book cover – material and parts

For a simple book cover you will need the following:

material

  • Fabric (s)
  • Sewing thread
  • Vlieseline in the size of the inner part
  • Pins or clips
  • Iron
  • sewing machine

Fabric parts

  • 1 x outer cover
  • 1 x inner part
  • 2 x inside pockets

The fabrics can different colours and create a nice contrast or you can choose the same tone or pattern for all parts.

Sew the book cover – the dimensions

Before you start, you still need the dimensions for the outer and inner part:

height = Book height + margin (seam allowance for top and bottom)

Example: 18.5 + 3 cm = 21.5 cm

width = Width front + width back + width book spine + room for maneuver (seam allowance for both sides)

Example: 12 + 12 + 3 + 3 cm = 30 cm

According to the example you would need two pieces of 30 x 21.5 cm.

For the inner tabs = Desired width x height

Example: 6 cm x 21.5 cm.

Remember: you need two inside pockets.

Sewing a book cover – simple instructions

  1. Cut pieces of fabric to fit.
  2. The iron-on fleece comes with the adhesive side on the left side of the inner fabric. Iron the fleece line onto the fabric according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  3. Now you put your pieces of fabric on top of each other: Outer fabric right side up (i.e. the beautiful side), one of the inner pockets on each side with the right side down. Make sure that the inside pockets are flush! Last but not least, the inner fabric comes on top with the right side down.
  4. When everything is flush, you pin the parts with needles or clips. If necessary, mark a small section with tailor's chalk for the turning opening!
  5. Now sew around it with a straight stitch – exception: the section for the Turning opening.
  6. After quilting, cut off the corners at an angle and remove any excess fabric at the lengths.
  7. In the next step you turn the book cover through the opening and, if necessary, push the corners outwards again, e.g. B. using a pen or rod.
  8. Once the book cover is turned over, iron it flat.
  9. Finally, you close the opening with a mattress stitch.
