Sewing a hair band: 2 variants without a pattern

We have two great instructions for you to easily sew hairbands yourself: a turban headband and a headband with a loop in the middle.

You need:

  • sewing machine
  • Jersey or knitted fabric
  • Matching sewing thread
  • Staples or needles
  • Fabric scissors

Sewing a hair band with a turban twist: instructions

You need to get your Hair band to be able to sew, two Jersey pieces. Now, of course, it depends on how wide you want your headband and how much your head circumference measures. Add two centimeters to your head circumference. For a wider headband with a head circumference of 55 cm, we now calculate in the instructions with the dimensions 57 x 24 cm (including seam allowances).

  1. Cut two rectangles according to your measurements.
  2. Fold one of the rectangles lengthways right sides together, so the left side is facing up!
  3. Use clips or pins to secure the top open side. Repeat the step for the other pattern piece.
  4. Now sew the marked long side shut with an overlock stitch, a zigzag stitch or with the overlock machine. Same with the second part.
  5. Turn both parts over so that the right side is now on the outside.
  6. Now lay the two hoses so that the seam is in the middle.
  7. One of the two parts lies horizontally with the seam in the middle and up in front of you.
  8. Place the second part vertically in the middle of the first part so that it looks like a plus sign.
  9. Now you take the two ends of the hose below together so that there is seam on seam.
  10. Place the lower side of the ribbon on top on the two ends from step 9. The seam is on top.
  11. Put the last end facing up – without turning it – under the other three ends. This is how the bandeau effect is created!
  12. Then you put all four open ends on top of each other, fix them so that they are exactly on top of each other and topstitch them off again with an overlock stitch.
  13. Cut off any excess corners and ends.
  14. Now turn the headband so the seam disappears inwards.

Sewing a hair band with a loop: sewing instructions

A nice alternative to the turban headband is one with a decorative loop, as in this example:

For this hair band you only need one of the tubes with your measurements plus a small rectangle for the loop.

  1. Prepare a hose with your measurements as described in the instructions above. Right side is on the outside.
  2. Cut a small rectangle out of your fabric, e.g. B. 10 x 12 cm. Depending on which size suits you, you can make it wider or narrower.
  3. Fold the rectangle lengthways in the middle, left side outside and stitch on the long side from.
  4. Now you turn the rectangle that the right side outside lies.
  5. Fold the rectangle in half. The two ends are now on top of each other, the seam runs on the outside.
  6. Sew the ends close together so that they become a small tube. Turn the hose inside out.
  7. Now you pull the tube over your hairband strip.
  8. Now turn the headband inside out, put right sides together, the seams are on top of each other.
  9. Pin the opening all around with pins, then stitch, but leave one small opening for turning.
  10. Over it you turn the hair band and sew it together with the magic seam.

Sew and vary the hair band

Both hair bands can be varied in size and fit adults as well as children and babies. And of course the bands can also be changed as desired. Instead of a loop, you can use a loop drum tie, instead of a single-colored turban headband you can use different ones Mix colors or patterns and much more – whatever you like.

For gifts or for yourself: As you can see, a headband like this is sewn in no time! Here we have even more great sewing ideas for beginners for you. And also great DIY projects, such as making decorations yourself, tinkering a hot air balloon or making jewelry.
