The new edition of "Sex and the City" has to do without Samantha Jones. HBO has now announced how the absence of the role will be explained.

The new edition of the "Sex and the City" cast has to do without Kim Cattrall (64). She won't be returning in her role as Samantha Jones. The streaming service responsible for the spin-off, HBO Max, has now revealed how the absence of the popular role will be quietly explained. "This time it's about women aged 50 and over. And like in real life, friendships or friendships grow over time," said Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys in an interview with "TV Line".

Leading actress Sarah Jessica Parker (55, Carrie Bradshaw) and author Michael Patrick King (66), as creative minds of the new edition, are not interested in retelling "Sex and The City" and for the characters to revive their thirties, Bloys emphasizes. “You're trying to tell an honest story about how to be a woman in her fifties in New York. So it should all feel realistic, and the friends you had when you were 30 you might not have by the time you're 50 . Friendships fade and new friendships begin, "explains the HBO executive.

Kim Cattrall made it clear a few years ago that she was not available for a "Sex and the City" sequel. After the second film in 2010, she had had enough of her role, she told the British Guardian in the summer of 2019. "SATC" author Candace Bushnell (62) had assured fans when she announced that Cattrall would not be featured in the new edition: The series would be "interesting" even without the actress. The production team bring many ideas to make up for Cattrall's absence, says Bushnell in an interview with the US gossip portal "Page Six". Kim is an adult woman who has made a decision "for which she certainly has ten very good reasons and I respect her for it," says the author.

Shooting planned for spring

The new season with the nickname "And just like that …" is based on the book "Sex and the City" by Candace Bushnell and the original TV series created by Darren Star (59). "The series will accompany Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte on their way from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s," reads the content of the new episodes. Filming will begin in New York in late spring. In addition to Parker, Cynthia Nixon (54, Miranda Hobbes) and Kristin Davis (55, Charlotte York) are also returning.
