Sex Education: where will we see the stars of the Netflix series next?

Now that “Sex Education” is over, its talented cast has plenty of projects in the works.

After a fourth and final season, Sex Education bid farewell to fans of Netflix’s bittersweet comedy. With its ensemble cast, led by stalwarts like Gillian Anderson and new talents, Laurie Nunn’s series tackled the delicate subject of teenage sexuality.

If the writing has always been particularly fine and chiseled, the success of the series is also due to all the actresses and actors who carried it with passion. Gillian Anderson and Asa Butterfield were already known to the general public when the series began on Netflix in 2019, but Sex Education also served as a springboard for new stars like Emma Mackey and Ncuti Gatwa, who both starred in Barbie, the hit of summer 2023.

Now that the sexual misadventures of Otis Milburn and his friends are over, the show’s large and diverse cast faces new opportunities in both film and television. And even though a large majority of the cast is British – since the series is set in England – that doesn’t mean many of them won’t venture to Hollywood.

Asa Butterfield

The Hugo Cabret actor began his career very young. And he’s not stopping anytime soon as he already has four projects coming up, now that he’s done wearing the same old Otis blue, red and white jacket. Asa Butterfield will soon lend his voice to the animated sci-fi film Watch The Skies (also starring Sean Bean, Gemma Arterton and Sam Claflin) which is still in production and in Stitch Head, an animated comedy with creatures from Frankenstein style which is in pre-production.

On the other hand, we will be able to see him in the comedy College Republicans, at the pre-production stage, a political story which takes place on a campus. Once again, Butterfield will be in good company as he will share the screen with Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson).

In addition, he will be found on Prime Video for a sequel to his holiday romantic comedy Your Christmas or Mine, released in December 2022. Scheduled for December 2023, Your Christmas or Mine 2 will reunite Butterfield with Cora Kirk, and introduce a new came to the franchise, the indescribable Jane Krakowski, (30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt).

Netflix

Emma Mackey

From romantic dilemmas to personal tragedies, Maeve, the strong head played by Emma Mackey, went through a lot in the last season of Sex Education. As Emma Mackey prepares to step out of Maeve’s shadow, she will soon star in a moving drama called Hot Milk. The film will revolve around an overbearing mother who embarks on a trip to the Spanish coast with her daughter after being diagnosed with a strange illness. The star of barbie and Death on the Nile stars alongside Fiona Shaw (aunt Petunia Dursley in the Harry Potter films) and Vicky Krieps (recently seen in The Three Musketeers: D’artagnan).

Netflix

Ncuti Gatwa

Otis’s best friend Eric had his share of storylines in the final season of Sex Education: he made new friends at the new Cavendish High School and began to have a better understanding of his sexual identity and religious. We’ve known it for a while now, but Ncuti Gatwa will be the next Doctor in Doctor Who, the fifteenth incarnation of the wackiest alien in television history.

The BAFTA winner will play a new version of Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield in an audio series and this time he can be seen in an episode of the World War II mini-series Masters of the Air, with Barry Keoghan and Austin Butler in the role of US Air Force pilots.

Netflix

Connor Swindells

Adam’s character has undergone a major evolution throughout the series, going from a real bully to a soft-spoken boy who struggles to find meaning in his life, as well as his place in society. As for the actor who plays Adam, Connor Swindells, he has yet to chart his own career trajectory.

After playing a supporting role in Barbie alongside his colleagues Ncuti Gatwa and Emma Mackey, he will appear in the second season of the series Rogue Heroes, created by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders). Connor Swindells plays real-life Scottish officer David Stirling in this series which looks at the origins of the Special Air Services (British special forces) during the Second World War.

Netflix

Gillian Anderson

The former X-Files star saw her career take off again, first with The Fall then with the role of Jean Milburn, Otis’ mother and super sexologist in Sex Education. Now that Jean is done caring for Otis, and must learn to find the right rhythm with Baby Joy’s presence, the two-time Emmy winner (for X-Files and The Crown) will star alongside Jason Isaacs in the marital drama The Salt Path.

She will also be seen opposite Lena Headey (Game of Thrones) in the series The Abandons and will play British journalist Emily Maitlis in the film Scoop, a biographical drama about the explosive interview of Prince Andrew by the BBC about his links to Jeffrey Epstein.
