The pressure is too great: the president of the Spanish Football Association, Rubiales, is resigning from his position. He has been under harsh criticism since a forced kiss shortly after the Women’s World Cup final. He announced his resignation in an interview.
Luis Rubiales resigns from his position as president of the Spanish Football Federation. He announced this in an interview with the English journalist Piers Morgan. When asked by Morgan if he would resign, Rubiales replied: “Yes, I will.” He will resign “because I cannot continue my work,” said Rubiales.
Morgan published a short excerpt from the interview with the 46-year-old Spaniard on X, the former Twitter. The conversation took place this Sunday.
The head of the association came under sharp criticism for forcing a kiss on the mouth of Spanish player Jenni Hermoso at the medal ceremony after the final of the Women’s World Cup. Hermoso filed a complaint against Rubiales last Wednesday. The public prosecutor then filed a lawsuit alleging sexual assault.
Despite the increasing criticism, Rubiales had refused to resign for weeks. The national players went on strike, while the men’s national team distanced itself from Rubiales. In addition, the women’s coach, Jorge Vilda, was fired.
