On mobile and fixed fiber, Orange and SFR are among the most expensive operators on the market. Fortunately, the “low cost” brands of the latter are catching up (or rather, the “cost”).

As an extension of its study on the prices of mobile plans and fiber optic internet subscriptions, the MonPetitForfait comparator has published the evolution of the monthly price of the offers offered by the operators. And among the most expensive, we find SFR, Orange and its subsidiary Nordnet. Conversely, RED by SFR, Sosh and the more confidential mobile virtual network operators (MVNO) such as Auchan Telecom or NRJ Mobile are among the most attractive, including the cost of the SIM card and promotions. Let’s take a complete look.

Orange, Nordnet and Free, the trio of the most expensive on optical fiber

In 2023, the prices of fiber optic internet subscriptions have increased, while those of mobile offers have fallen. Concerning the evolution of the monthly price of a fiber internet box in France, this is on the rise, with an increase of 7.80% between 2022 and 2023, to 30.89 euros on average per subscription kept on a basic basis. of 24 months.

The main lesson to be learned is that all operators have increased their prices. And in this little game, it is Orange which has become the most expensive, with an average monthly price of 36.49 euros (+3 euros over one year) for a fiber internet offer. The historic operator is more expensive than its subsidiary Nordnet (35.04 euros), particularly specialized in satellite Internet, which was ahead of it in 2022.

Behind, Free (from 31.9 euros to 34.53 euros on average in 2023) completes the podium. Xavier Niel’s operator may well stabilize its prices on mobile, which is beneficial, but it does not hesitate to increase its fixed offers. Then, we find:

  • SFR (30.85 euros),
  • Bouygues Telecom (27.7 euros),
  • Sosh (26.01 euros), Orange brand,
  • and RED by SFR (25.6 euros), SFR brand, as its name suggests.

The so-called low-cost brands of traditional telecom operators therefore remain much more attractive.

Mobile Plans

Between two almost identical packages, the price difference can be considerable

On mobile, there are many more operators competing, and the differences are sometimes colossal. The most expensive, SFR, for example, offers a mobile plan at 40.47 euros on average, while Auchan Telecom, the cheapest, plummets to 9.85 euros! MonPetitForfait was careful in its calculation, based on the cost of a subscription for 24 months. So we also did a little calculation.

For example, by taking the 100 GB package from SFR at 10.99 euros per month, we realize that it is not so extravagant compared to the 80 GB (9.99 euros) and 120 GB (11.99 euros) packages. 99 euros) from Auchan Mobile (an MVNO from Bouygues Telecom). Except that if the three packages are without commitment, that of SFR only offers the price of 10.99 euros per month for promotional purposes, and for 6 months only. Afterwards, it increases to 25.99 euros/month. Which means that by keeping the same plan for 24 months, you will pay:

  • 533.76 euros for the 100 GB package from SFR,
  • 239.76 euros for the 80 GB package from Auchan Mobile,
  • and 287.76 euros for the 120 GB package from Auchan Mobile.

So you understand the subtlety. If on the surface, the prices are similar from one operator to another, you must always calculate, before subscribing, its long-term cost. With offers which see the famous promotional period now reduced from 12 to 6 months, the so-called historical operators are becoming less attractive.

SFR, Orange and Nordnet, the most expensive in France on mobile

On mobile, it is SFR which wins the poisonous prize of the most expensive operator in France, with a mobile plan which costs, on average, 40.47 euros/month. This is almost three times the average price of what it offers with RED by SFR (15.54 euros). Note that the study always takes into account promotions, the cost of the SIM card and retention of the subscription for 24 months.

Behind, Orange (38.29 euros) and Nordnet (34.76 euros) are struggling, ahead of Bouygues Telecom (34.76 euros) and, much further behind, La Poste Mobile (24.72 euros), which is under SFR network. Here is the rest of the ranking of average costs per operator for mobile plans over 24 months:

  • Coriolis Telecom (21.1 euros),
  • YouPrice (19.59 euros),
  • Free Mobile (18.87 euros), still the cheapest of the big four,
  • B&YOU (17.92 euros),
  • Sosh (17.23 euros),
  • RED by SFR (15.54 euros),
  • Prixtel (15.3 euros),
  • Réglo Mobile (14.78 euros),
  • Symba Mobile (14.31 euros),
  • Lebara (13.49 euros),
  • NRJ Mobile (12.63 euros),
  • Lycamobile (11.66 euros),
  • Cdiscount Mobile (11.28 euros),
  • Source Mobile (10.39 euros),
  • and Auchan Telecom (9.85 euros).
