After two (long) years of waiting, Shadow and Bone returns this Thursday, March 16 on Netflix. And so as not to be lost, here is a very useful little glossary.
Shadow and Bone is back! In season 2, Alina (Jessie Mei Li) will discover that the Darkling (Ben Barnes) is still alive and more powerful than ever. Not being strong enough to make the Fold disappear, the young woman goes in search of the second amplifier in the hope of having enough power.
For this, she can count on Mal (Archie Renaux) and on a new ally in the person of Nikolai Lantsov. This character portrayed by Patrick Gibson is both a very famous corsair… and the King’s son.
The Six of Crows will also be present and the team as we know it in the books should finally be formed. Fans will finally discover the interpreter of the adorable Wylan (Jack Wolfe), an expert in explosives who will fall under the spell of Jesper (and vice versa).
And if you didn’t understand anything in the previous paragraphs, here is a little glossary to help you refresh your memory.
THE MAP
Several kingdoms are mentioned in Shadow and Bone and it is not always easy to remember everything. These are the three countries which are regularly cited and which are important for understanding history.
Rivka: Kingdom where the series mainly takes place. It is headed by the Lantsov royal family. There are two armies: one composed of Grishas and the second of soldiers without powers. Alina and Mal grew up in the village of Keramzin. Os Alta is its capital. This is where the Little Palace, vacation spot of the Grishas, is located.
Kersh: Small island located on the other side of the Shadow Fold. Its capital, Ketterdam, is known for its crime. This is where Kaz and his team live. At the end of season 1, the Six of Crows decide to return to Kerch but will discover that Pekka Rollins has taken control of the Club and a good part of the Barrel. They are officially wanted criminals.
Fjerda: Kingdom located south of Ravka. These people do not like the Grishas, whom they consider as sorcerers. They form soldiers, the Drüskelle, in order to capture and kill them.
Matthias (Calahan Skogman) is one of them, but he fell in love with Nina (Danielle Galligan). Arriving in Kerch, the latter has him imprisoned in order to protect her, but unknowingly sends him to Hellgate, a lawless prison where violence reigns.
Shuhan: It is a new country that will be introduced in Season 2 of Shadow and Bone. The Six of Crows and part of Nikolai’s team go in search of an artifact capable of killing Darkling creatures. A mission that is not part of the novels.
THE LEXIC
The Grishas: Second Army soldiers. People with abilities, which they call “little science”. There are several kinds and they have very specific names: Caporalki (Founders and Healers), Etherealki (Howlers, Inferni and Tidemakers) and Materialki (Durasts and Alkemi).
Kofta: Long coat worn by the Grishas. Color and embroidery change depending on status and power. Only the Darkling’s is black.
The Volcras: Name given to the creatures that inhabit the Shadow Fold. At the end of Season 1, the Darkling summons new creatures from the Merzost (an abomination derived from petty magic), which he calls the Nichevo’ya.
An amplifier: These rare, sometimes mystical items, created by Morozova, allow the Grishas to increase their powers. There are three: the deer, the sea dragon and the firebird. Alina has recovered the powers of the first and goes in search of the second in season 2 of Shadow and Bone.
Shadowfold: Name of the thick fog that cuts across realms. It was created by the Dark Heretic hundreds of years ago. Only Alina has the power to make it disappear but for that, the young woman would have to find the second amplifier.
Drüskelle: Fjerda soldier tasked with tracking down and killing the Grishas.
