Shadow Spotlight: a dated French conference on the future of cloud computing for gamers

Shadow is a service of cloud computing allowing access (via a subscription) to a gaming PC from any screen/device. Unlike in GeForce NOW or from Stadia, this is indeed a complete PC and not a restricted PC dedicated to gaming. This offer also allows you to play VR via an internal solution (still in beta) or an external solution (Virtual Desktop).

The company Shadow, created in 2015, has experienced many twists and turns, from its meteoric rise to its descent into hell. In October 2019, the company Blade (who hold Shadow) decided, in order to guard against the arrival of GAFAM on his playground, to raise funds of 30 million euros. To this fundraising are added 3 offers that we detail here :

The announcement of its 3 levels marked the decline of the company Bladedemand quickly exceeded supply and the company could not supply the formulas Ultra and Infinity. Alone Boost was actually available, but was above all the least profitable. In front of offers Ultra and Infinity which were struggling to set up (in the midst of COVID-19) and a formula Boost which cost far more than it brought in, customer dissatisfaction and the departure of its founder, the society Blade was placed in receivership in March 2021.

A month later, the Paris Commercial Court entrusted Hubic (founded by Octave Klaba) the takeover of the company. It is in May 2021 that the company announced the increase of its tariffs and the pure and simple stop of the offers Ultra and Infinityas well as the annual subscription. Only the formula was kept Boostwhich then went from €12.99 to €29.99, the original price of the Shadow at its beginnings. After this announcement, apart from some software improvements, nothing was mentioned on the hardware and the next configurations while the initial promise of Shadow was to offer its customers PC configurations always at the forefront (to this day, they are always equipped with graphics cards equivalent to the GTX 1080, which is beginning to date). This is the reason why we will be very attentive and vigilant to the announcements (promises?) during the next conference of Shadow which will take place on May 18 at 5:00 p.m. on Twitch and Youtube.

That said, the server Discord of Shadow being somewhat talkative, we can already make some assumptions about the announcements that could be made there :

  • The next GPUs should be equivalent to the RTX 3070;
  • Increase in RAM, 16 GB against 12 GB currently;
  • More powerful CPU in order to avoid the bottleneck (bottleneck);
  • No new formulas, but a “perf” option (paid) from its customer area;
  • A cycle is envisaged for hardware renewal. When the most powerful configuration shows its age, it will be integrated into the basic offer, and the most advanced will benefit from the new hardware (promise already made at launch, Ed);
  • Professional offers.

We can only advise you during this conference of leave a tab open on the home page of your personal account in order to subscribe to this or that offer/option if the latter came to show the end of their noses during the live. For virtual reality enthusiasts, be aware that a complete file will be put online before the said announcement and will take care of comparing the 3 PC solutions. VR dematerialized that are Shadow VR, Plutosphere and paper space.

If you haven’t taken the plunge yet, you can treat yourself to a Oculus Quest 2 at the house of Bakerthe Fnac, Darty or Amazon for €349.99. You can also find good PCs for gamers there.
