Shameful! Current Values caricature Danièle Obono as a slave

In the latest issue of Valeurs Actuelles, Danièle Obono, MP, appears caricatured as a slave. A shameful, racist drawing, decried by the entire political class.

All summer, the magazine Current values published "summer politics-fictions", featuring different political figures at different times in history. In the last issue, it is the deputy Danièle Obono who is the main character of this fiction, described as the story of"Obono the African, where the rebellious MP experiences the responsibility of Africans in the horrors of slavery". In addition to the shocking remarks that the text contains, a shameful caricature of the deputy France Insoumise, transformed into a slave.

We can see the member with chains around her neck, which did not fail to make the main interested party react. "It seems" What we can say nothing. Fortunately, we can still write racist shit in a tea towel illustrated by the images of a black African French MP repainted as a slave … extreme right, odious, stupid and cruel. In short, equal to itself ", commented Danièle Obono on Twitter. It immediately received the support of members of its party, like Jean-Luc Mélenchon, but the whole political class defended it, from Benoît Hamon (Socialist Party) to Wallerand de Saint-Just (National Rally ). Emmanuel Macron called on the MP to condemn the racism of which she was a victim, while Jean Castex, Prime Minister, called "to an unambiguous condemnation".

On Twitter, Current values issued a half hearted apology, explaining: "This is a fiction depicting the horrors of slavery organized by Africans in the 18th century", adding that this described the "terrible truth that the natives do not want to see", and denying himself to be racist. On BFM TV, Deputy Editorial Director Tugdual Denis made (more or less) honorable amends: "We understand, with the extremely violent symbolic charge of this image, that Danièle Obono is shocked. We apologize to her on a personal basis. (…) If I had her in front of me today, I would say "sorry, I'm sorry I hurt you" https://www.aufeminin.com/ ", also assuring him that the magazine was "not racist".

For our part, we prefer to retain the statement of the deputy Danièle Obono on BFM TV, which sums up the situation rather well: "This image is an insult to our ancestors. It is an insult to my family. It is an insult to my parliamentary group, to my movement La France Insoumise, but it is also an insult, I believe, to the Republic. I am a Member of Parliament for the French Republic, and I believe that the reactions that there have been, including from colleagues, allies, but also political opponents, show to what extent a line has been crossed ".
