Shazam on Wear OS can now recognize songs without your smartphone

Good news for owners of smartwatches running Wear OS, since the Shazam app can now work without your Android smartphone.

Shazam’s music recognition features are now available on Wear OS smartwatches, and a recent update has allowed the Wear OS version of Apple’s app to work independently of a paired smartphone.

Previously, the Shazam app for Google’s wearable platform required you to keep your Android phone within range to identify songs you wanted to search for using the watch app. But with this latest update, this telephone connection is no longer mandatory.

Shazam now works without the need for a smartphone

Once updated, Shazam for Wear OS can recognize music playing around you and get song tags using just your smartwatch’s data connection, without needing your phone. This allows you to use the music search function while running errands, at the gym or elsewhere, without needing your mobile device within reach.

The core Shazam experience remains the same on Wear OS. Simply launch the app, tap the Shazam logo to start listening, and The app will automatically detect and identify any music playing in the background within seconds.

Another useful new feature is that if your watch loses its internet connection in the middle of listening, the app will automatically record a sample of the song. It can then analyze and identify it once the connection is re-established, instead of failing outright. Another feature also allows you to listen to a song for longer to be sure to identify it correctly.

Any song successfully identified by the Shazam watch app is instantly synced to all other devices that have the Shazam mobile app installed and are signed in to the same account. From there, you can view full song details, listen to samples, watch music videos, access lyrics, etc. If you own a smart watch running Wear OS, such as the latest Galaxy Watch or Google’s Pixel Watch, this update could be very useful to you.
