She abandons her baby after discovering the lies of her sperm donor

In Japan, a young mother decided to abandon her baby at birth. She had recently learned that her sperm donor had lied about her origins and level of education.

According to the Tokyo Shimbun, the young woman in question – a Tokyoite in her thirties – and her husband had started looking for a sperm donor. Already parents of a first child, they feared that the husband’s hereditary disease would be transmitted to their second child.

The couple met a donor, in their twenties, on social media in 2019 and after a dozen sexual encounters, the 30-year-old became pregnant in June. It was after several months of pregnancy, when it was too late to have an abortion, that the couple discovered the true identity of the donor: he was not Japanese but Chinese, had not graduated from the University of Kyoto and was married, although he claimed to be single.

The child was given up for adoption immediately after birth and the couple sued the donor. They are seeking two million dollars in damages for fraud and emotional distress. According to the couple’s lawyer, her client suffers from sleep disturbances and has been physically and emotionally traumatized by the case. Its main purpose would be to prevent the giver from preying on other people.

the couple deemed “superficial”

The couple’s decision was fiercely criticized in the country. Asked by Vice, an employee of a children’s home described the couple as “superficial”, regretting that they “treat the child like an object”. “It’s better to leave him with someone who can be a good parent,” she said.

In Japan, there is no law governing sperm donation. There is only one sperm bank – opened last June – and artificial inseminations are reserved for female couples, so the vast majority of Japanese people turn to social networks.
