Baerbock against operating permit for Nord Stream 2

Russian President Putin is using the gas crisis in Europe to promote the rapid commissioning of the Nord Stream 2 Baltic Sea pipeline. The Greens boss Baerbock speaks out against granting the operating permit. European law does not allow that at all.

Green leader Annalena Baerbock has given Russia joint responsibility for the high gas prices and has spoken out in favor of not putting the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline into operation for the time being. According to European energy law, the operator of Nord Stream 2 “must be different from the one who conducts the gas,” she told the newspapers of the Funke media group. “As long as it is one and the same group, the operating license may not be granted.”

The high gas prices are primarily the result of high demand and low supply. “A Russian poker game can also be observed here: the gas deliveries were properly reduced,” said Baerbock, who is being traded as a possible foreign minister in a traffic light government. “We mustn’t allow ourselves to be blackmailed.”

Although Russia is supplying gas to Europe in accordance with the contract, the gas storage facilities are comparatively empty. “This was probably brought about deliberately by the Russian side in order to force the rapid commissioning of Nord Stream 2 – even if not all legal requirements have yet been met.”

“A solar system on every new roof”

At the same time, Baerbock made it clear that she believes the phase-out of coal to be brought forward from 2038 to 2030 is likely. The traffic light parties not only shook the coal compromise, “we are also changing the coal exit law in order to bring the coal exit forward to 2030”. Of course, enough renewable energies are needed for this. “To this end, we will establish an obligation to build a solar system on every new roof and finally to use two percent of the country’s area for wind power.” The exploratory paper by the SPD, Greens and FDP states that the coal phase-out will “ideally” be brought forward from 2038 to 2030.

A speed limit on motorways would have been “a big measure for road safety and a small one for climate protection,” she said. “There was no majority for this in the explorations.”
