This Briton wore an IUD for almost 29 years without knowing it, and could not have children for several years with her companion. A long psychological suffering for her.

The story of Jayne Huddleston is, to say the least, singular. In May 1989, she had an IUD inserted but a year later, while the GP was giving her a smear, he announces to her that he does not see this method of contraception. Then comes the verdict of an ultrasound on which the intrauterine device is not visible. The scientist advises him to put a second one, he who is the first to suspect of having fallen.
It was then that two years later, this Briton, who already has a son named Darren, and her new companion David decide to have a child. She then naturally had the IUD removed, but what no one knew, it’s that she was wearing two at the time and one of them stayed put.
However, when the second IUD was inserted, Jayne Huddleston complained of various symptoms (heavy periods, bleeding, infections, stomach ache, etc.), to which her doctor replied that they were “just the hormones”.

Eight unsuccessful IVFs

Despite symptoms that lasted for years, these were due to the presence of the forgotten IUD. After consulting infertility specialists, they are suggested to do in vitro fertilization (IVF): “Even after the first few cycles didn’t work, the doctors didn’t seem too worried. They said we had good quality embryos,” recalls Jayne Huddleston and tests show that she is very fertile. “I remember that at one time David even asked the doctor if they were sure there wasn’t still an IUD inside. We were told no, it would have been visible on ultrasound. Despite further attempts, I did not get pregnant.” In total, the couple completed eight IVF cycles between 1995 and 2022. Six of them were not reimbursed, costing them thousands of pounds.
It was finally in 2019, when Jayne consulted for back pain and a pap smear, that the doctor believed he saw an IUD, which was confirmed by ultrasound. “When you think about it, what could have happened, it never really goes away, I would never get those years back,” she remembers devastated.
