“She tried to swallow medicine”: the story of a chilling night between François Hollande and Valérie Trierweiler

In a book to be published at the end of January, Jean-Christophe Cambadélis delivers confidences on a terrible night between François Hollande and Valérie Trierweiler, the day after the revelations concerning the idyll of the former head of state with Julie Gayet. Le Point unveils an incredible extract this Friday, January 21.

It was a night that could have ended very badly. Next January 27, Jean-Christophe Cambadélis will publish a book, titled Yesterday, today and tomorrow. A book in which the former Socialist deputy returns in particular to an appointment with the former President of the Republic Francois Hollande, January 11, 2014. An interview during which the socialist discovers a statesman on the edge of the abyss, and for good reason: his wife at the time tried the worst. This Friday, January 21, Point delivers some excerpts from the book, and the underside of this meeting: “the day after a terrible night during which his companion Valerie Trierweiler, desperate to learn of her misfortune through the gossip press, attempted to swallow medication”, says Jean-Christophe Cambadélis, before adding: “The companion of the President of the Republic hospitalized after a marital conflict in the very apartments of the Élysée, there is something to be upset or, at the very least, stirred”.

Despite this chilling night, François Hollande does not forget his duties: “the president received me that morning. He wouldn’t cancel our date even though he hadn’t slept all night. He is visibly struggling with sleep. This meeting is incredible”, recalls Jean-Christophe Cambadélis. But fatigue is gradually taking over the former President of the Republic: “When the president falls asleep at the turn of a sentence, seeing his eyes close and knowing the reasons for his condition, I raise my voice so that he stays with me. Nevertheless, he is there, knowing that a president does not belong to himself and must not give in to appearances. He comes back into the conversation with relevance and a few absences”, he says.

The strange confession of François Hollande to Jean-Christophe Cambadélis

Shaken by the events, François Hollande then wishes to make a confession to Jean-Christophe Cambadélis: “By a parabola, of which I am not sure that it then measures all the effects, he wants to explain to me the reasons for his breakup with demand policy and why he will announce in an upcoming press conference its choice in favor of a supply-side policy to try to ‘control unemployment as necessary to France and to the French people as a condition of [s]re-election'”, explains the former first secretary of the Socialist Party, stating that “this change of strategic footing comes at the very moment of a very big change in his personal life“.
