Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey Jr: soon series to extend the universe

As Sherlock Holmes airs tonight on TFX, the future of the franchise is still uncertain on the big screen. But the adventure could well continue on television with the development of two series.

The film Sherlock Holmes was an opportunity for Guy Ritchie to offer his adaptation of the famous character of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but also to bring together Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law on screen in an extraordinary adventure. Success was there when it was released and so was its sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows two years later.

Due to the popularity of this cinematic universe, there was soon talk of a third film… which never saw the light of day (yet). But do not despair! If you enjoyed (re) seeing Sherlock Holmes broadcast tonight on TFX, know that series projects are in development by Robert Downey Jr. himself !

Two Sherlock series planned

Even if rumors still persist about the production – aborted because of the Covid – of a third installment directed by Dexter Fletcher (Rocketman), the future of the cinematographic universe “Sherlock Holmes” will be on television. According to information from varietythe HBO Max platform is working on two series rooted in the franchise.

Sources claim that each of the shows will focus on a new character, which should (or should have) been introduced in Sherlock Holmes 3. And both of these series will be executive produced by Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan Downey.

Warner Bros. France

These projects, in discussions since 2020, are part of a strategy of the HBO Max platform aimed at expanding the universes of Warner Bros. Series derived from It, Dune or The Batman are in development.

Sherlock Holmes had been a big hit for Warner Bros., with the two films each grossing over $500 million worldwide. The third film was supposed to be released in December 2020 before being pushed back to December 2021. Ultimately, this sequel has stalled for the time being.
