Trace of Nord Stream sabotage leads to Poland

It is still unclear who is responsible for the explosion on the Nord Stream pipeline. According to a report, the German investigators are now following new clues. The base of operations of the saboteurs could therefore have been in Poland.

According to a media report, German investigators are following clues to Poland when investigating the explosions on the Nord Stream pipelines in the Baltic Sea. There are indications that a suspected sabotage team may have used Poland as an operational base, the Wall Street Journal reported. The newspaper refers to the evaluation of data from the sailing yacht “Andromeda”, which is suspected of having been used to sabotage the pipelines.

Investigators fully reconstructed the ship’s two-week voyage using data from its radio and navigation equipment, satellite and cell phones, and email accounts. They found out that the yacht had deviated from its course in order to enter Polish waters. In addition, the investigators had tried to “assign at least one Ukrainian soldier” to DNA samples from shipboard. The Federal Criminal Police Office and the office of Poland’s prime minister did not initially respond to Reuters inquiries.

The Washington Post reported a few days ago that three months before the attack on the Nord Stream pipelines, the United States had learned of Ukrainian plans to attack the natural gas pipelines. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy then denied his country’s involvement in the attack. Russia had pumped natural gas from Siberia to Germany and other European countries through Nord Stream 1 until the delivery stop. Nord Stream 2 was not commissioned because of the Russian attack on Ukraine. The two twin tubes were severely damaged by explosions in September 2022.

According to the Wall Street Journal, investigators concluded that the explosive used was HMX, also known as octogen, which is suitable for destroying underwater infrastructure. The crew of the yacht set course for Poland after the alleged laying of explosives on Nord Stream 1, the newspaper reported, citing people familiar with the route of the “Andromeda”. Then the ship, which had been rented from a German company just a few days earlier, headed back north to, according to the investigators, also attach explosives to Nord Stream 2.

As early as March, the media reported that the suspect yacht belonged to a Ukrainian-owned company from Poland. The explosions on the pipelines occurred in the economic zones of Sweden and Denmark.
