Shiro Games reveals more details about Dune: Spice Wars


Based on the work of Frank Herbert who hadn’t been talked about like this for a long time, thanks to Denis Villeneuve’s film but also to the open world survival game in preparation at Funcom, Dune: Spice Wars presents itself as both a real-time strategy game and a 4X. “The game takes place in real time, but the pace is slower than in a typical RTS (and you can pause and fast forward). The game also features exploration, territory control, economic growth, combat, politics, and espionage features that make it a true 4X game but don’t take away from the basic STR experience players expect.“, explains the FAQ.

Regarding the base construction aspect, Shiro Games explains that the player will build buildings in his base of operations (Arrakeen for the Atreides faction, for example) but that he will not place them manually on the ground because the scale of the game is much larger than in a traditional RTS. The studio also confirms that the maps will be generated procedurally with options to configure the size, the strength of the wind or the activity of the sandworms.

The FAQ also insists that Dune: Spice Wars does not borrow any direct element from Northgard, the studio’s previous creation. “Both are real-time games with a slower pace. Beyond that, the games are very different. Dune: Spice Wars takes place on a much larger scale, with politics, trade, black ops, and a more in-depth resource management system. Game duration is also 2-3x longer than Northgard (although that may still change at this point)“, can we read.

Dune: Spice Wars will feature four playable factions at launch, including the much-needed Houses Atreides and Harkonnen, but a 5th is expected during Early Access and even more thereafter. Some choices, such as representing the Atreides house with a green and black banner, may seem surprising compared to previous Dune games but stem from respect for the writings of Frank Herbert, main source for Shiro Games. The team also confirms having played all previous Dune games as well as board games, but the influence of these titles will not necessarily be predominant.

The FAQ also confirms that the game will be available in French at launch and that multiplayer is on the early access program, but not from the start. Neither does the campaign, which will be available sometime in Early Access. Shiro Games believes the game will be very solid from day one but wants to allow itself the opportunity to change or fix systems and add content based on community feedback. Finally, mod support is unconfirmed at this time and no additional content is scheduled at this time. It will also be necessary to wait until the game is sufficiently advanced before possibly hearing about a release on other platforms than the PC.
