Short of staff, the hospital on the verge of asphyxiation


DECRYPTION – After two years of Covid, and beds which are already closing for lack of staff, hospitals are very worried about the summer. A first crisis for the new Minister of Health.

In Bordeaux, the emergency department is forced to restrict its access at night. In Chinon, the activity of emergencies downright suspended, for lack of personnel. Almost 20% of the 620 hospitals or clinics with an emergency department would be affected, according to the Samu-Urgences de France association. In Seine-Saint-Denis, maternities are also threatened with closure, while one in three midwives is missing. Even a state-of-the-art service, in the heart of Paris, such as that of clinical immunopathology at the Saint-Louis hospital is faced with difficulties in recruiting night nurses.

Between resignations, work stoppages, difficulties in recruiting, absenteeism is increasing at the hospital, which is emerging exhausted from two years of Covid and weakened by older structural difficulties. “Beds are closed in more than three quarters of establishments, many blocks are idling and there are emergency service closures in all regions”worries Frédéric Valletoux…
