Shortage of raw materials – Over 12,000 Upper Austrians already on short-time work

At the end of October, 27,776 Upper Austrians were looking for a job, and the number of long-term unemployed is also falling. In the shadow of the positive development, the number of short-time workers continues to rise.

“In contrast to previous years, unemployment also fell in October,” says Iris Schmidt, deputy managing director of the Upper Austria Public Employment Service. The number of long-term unemployed is also falling: at the end of October there were still 9,949 people in our state who were registered here. A situation that the AMS Upper Austria describes as “dramatic”.

The raw material shortages continue to challenge the companies: In Upper Austria, the number of short-time workers climbed above the 12,000 mark – to exactly 12,222 people. At BMW Steyr, the number of employees who worked short-term rose to 800 in October. In September it was 660. The trigger here is the shortage of electronic parts, which has stumbled the automotive industry.
