Showdown: the basic planned demo for the GTX 980 optimized on Quest 2

Showdown is a PC tech demo VR released in 2014i.e. eight years ago on theOculus Rift first of the name. It presents an action scene in mode bullet time. The experience was created with the engine UnrealEngine 4 and was sort of a technology showcase on the potential of virtual reality with high fidelity rendering. In 2022, it returns to our autonomous headsets.

The demo had purpose of presenting graphics VR high fidelity capable of running on a GTX 980 (the best GPUs of the time, memories, memories…) on the first Oculus Rift at a rate of 90 frames per second. You can download for free Showdown on theApp Lab at this address. The app was powered by Meta on the Meta Quest and acts asoptimization best practices case study of PC content VR for Quest.

We were able to test the demo on the Meta Quest 2 and it also runs at 90 fps, but with a much higher resolution : 1832×1920 (Quest 2) versus 1080×1200 (Oculus Rift CV1). Incredible will you tell us! Yes, but there is a catch… The application has suffered here a drastic cut on textures and lighting in particular. But that’s not all, a fairly large fixed foveal rendering is used, and technology AppSWallowing a significant performance gain of up to 70%, has been activated to correctly maintain 90 frames per second.

The rendering is not as beautiful as on PC VR. It must be said that the GTX980even considering its age, remains very much superior to the Snapdragon XR2 in terms of performance, he who is included in our Meta Quest 2. It sits slightly behind a GTX-1060. Nevertheless, we can salute the work of the developers who demonstrate once again thatmuch can be done on the Quest with a bit of optimization.

The visual experience of the demo can be configured through the settings menu. It is therefore possible to play on theAppSWlevel CPU/GPUsdisplay frequency, etc.

GAMERGEN.COM offers you the tool Quest Games Optimizer to optimize more than 230 games in one click Quest to make them more graphically beautiful.
