Family say goodbye with touching words

Sidney Poitier has died at the age of 94. His family said goodbye to the Oscar winner in a touching statement.
Sidney Poitier died at the age of 94. In a statement, which is available to the US magazine “People”, explains his family, “There are no words to express the deep sense of loss and grief we are experiencing right now. We are so grateful that he was able to spend his last day with his family and friends.”
To the family, Poitier was not only a brilliant actor, activist and a man of incredible grace and moral strength, “he was also a devoted and loving husband, a supportive and loving father and a man who always put the family first “.
“Although he is no longer with us in this realm, his beautiful soul will continue to guide and inspire us,” the statement continues. “He will live on in us, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren – in every laugh, every curious question, every act of compassion and kindness. His legacy will live on in the world, inspiring not just through his incredible work, but even more through his humanity. ” At the end, the family thanks for the worldwide sympathy and love that Poitier and his life’s work had shown.
Sidney Poitier made history in 1964. He was honored with an Oscar for “Best Actor” for his performance in “Lilien auf dem Felde” – as the first African American. Poitier was from the Bahamas, but was born during a visit to the United States and was therefore a US citizen. After various engagements at the theater, his Hollywood career began in 1950 with “The Hatred is Blind”. His most important works include “Lilien auf dem Felde” and “Flucht in Ketten” (1958), “In der Wärme der Nacht” (1967) and “Sneakers – Die Lautlosen” (1992). He last appeared in front of the camera in 2001 in the TV movie “The Last Brickmaker in America”.
Poitier leaves his wife Joanna Shimkus (78) and five daughters. His sixth daughter, Gina Poitier, passed away in 2018. He had four children from his first marriage; he had two daughters with Shimkus.
Harry Belafonte loses a “brother”
Numerous stars have already said goodbye to the actor. “For over 80 years Sidney and I have laughed, cried and done as much mischief as possible,” said Harry Belafonte (94) “Page Six”. “He’s really been my brother and partner in trying to make this world a little better. He’s definitely made mine a lot better.” Halle Berry (55) answered on Instagram to speak. Among other things, she wrote about a joint picture: “You made an indelible impression with your extraordinary talent and paved the way for blacks to be seen and heard in the abundance of who we are. You were an iconic pioneer.”
