MADRID/FRANKFURT (Reuters) – Siemens Gamesa plans to cut around 2,500 jobs, or nearly 9% of its workforce, as part of its drive to return to profitability, two people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

According to figures available on the company’s website, a specialist in wind turbines, employs some 27,000 people. The regions or divisions that would be affected by these job cuts were not immediately known.

No final decision has yet been made and the number of jobs affected could still change, the sources said.

Siemens Energy offered in May to buy the balance of the capital of Siemens Gamesa that it does not yet hold, in order to simplify the shareholding structure of the Spanish company.

Siemens Energy’s offer values Siemens Gamesa, which issued three profit warnings in less than a year, at around 12.3 billion euros and the relevant stake at 4.1 billion euros.

Siemens Gamesa, which is due to report third quarter results on Tuesday, declined to comment. A Siemens Energy spokesperson said Siemens Gamesa management was responsible for all operational matters.
