Sierra Leone: Former President Koroma indicted for attempted coup

FREETOWN (Reuters) – Former Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma has been charged with treason in the investigation into an attempted coup in November, a Freetown court said on Wednesday. the capital.

Gunmen attacked military barracks, a prison and other locations across the country on November 26, freeing around 2,200 detainees and leaving more than 20 dead.

Authorities later said it was an attempted coup, carried out primarily by Ernest Bai Koroma’s bodyguards. They had summoned the former president for questioning at the beginning of December.

The former president had the charges against him read to him as he stood in the dock and while some of his supporters wept in the courtroom.
