Hollywood star is honored with Golden Lion
Sigourney Weaver will receive the Golden Lion in a few weeks.

After almost five decades in the film business, Sigourney Weaver is honored with the Golden Lion for her life’s work.
Sigourney Weaver (74) has been one of Hollywood’s biggest stars for decades. After more than 45 years in the business, the American is now set to receive the Golden Lion for her lifetime achievement at the 81st Venice Film Festival. According to a statement, Weaver will be honored during the festival, which takes place from August 28 to September 7.
An action icon is honored
Weaver feels “truly honored to receive the Golden Lion for my lifetime achievement from the Venice Biennale,” the film legend said in a statement. Receiving the award is a privilege that she shares with everyone she has worked with over the years.
Weaver had her first small film role in 1977 in Woody Allen’s (88) “Annie Hall”. Just two years later, she became a star and the dream factory’s flagship action heroine with the lead role in Ridley Scott’s (86) sci-fi classic “Alien”. Countless roles followed – not only in other films in the “Alien” series, but also in hits and often award-winning productions such as “Ghostbusters”, “Gorillas in the Mist”, “The Guns of Women” and “Avatar”.
Few have the caliber of Sigourney Weaver
“An actress of Sigourney Weaver’s caliber has few competitors,” said festival director Alberto Barbera (74) in his statement. Weaver soon became a symbolic figure of the 1980s. And he continued: “Over the course of this decade, she shaped the image of a heroine the likes of which had never existed before in the action film genre, one who was able to successfully take on the male models that had dominated epic and adventure films until then.” With her work, she built bridges between “the most sophisticated arthouse cinema and films that appeal to the audience in an open and original way.” And she always remained true to herself.
The festival line-up is scheduled to be announced on July 23.
