Simone’s news 36: do men often think about the Roman Empire? (VIDEO): Current Woman Le MAG

There are only women in this car“: an Australian is shocked by the single-sex cars on the Tokyo subway.

A single-sex wagon for greater safety

Travelling in Japan, Australian TikToker @ShearingShedVlogs discovered the subway cars reserved for women. And this one was “shocked“. Then, entering the car in question, the man continues: “It feels like Saudi Arabia here. I am the women’s inspector who checks that there are only women in this carriage: yes, yes, there are only women“. This type of initiative is put in place so that women (us) can feel safe thanks to the chosen non-mixing. As a reminder, 80% women are harassed in public transport, 96% of rape victims are women, 72% of victims of domestic violence are women. Here are infinitely more shocking figures. Women-only carriages have existed in Japan for more than two decades. However, in Japanese transport, sexual assault and taking of intimate photos/videos are still very (very) widespread. Moreover, phones don’t even have a silent option for taking photos to avoid unpleasant surprises.

The Roman Empire: a male concern

On the social network Tiktok, users discovered that men living in the United States regularly think about Roman Empire. Yes. Some “3 times a day“, others”once a week“. The question everyone is asking is: why? The men interviewed answer: “lots of cool stuff happened“, the Colosseums are cool“, “it was a major civilization“. While in the editorial office, François often thinks about it and reads biographies of Roman emperors, Hedi declares that he does not at all and recalls: “these are alpha male references“. Could it be because of the film Gadiator, the Empire video games or a more psychological explanation? For historian Cullen Murphy, most historical writings were written by men and are about men and military affairs : subjects that historically attract men more than women. And perhaps the men interviewed think they are thinking of the Roman Empire because they include Julius Caesar, the circus, bread… Whereas Julius Caesar existed before the Roman Empire!

Where are the lesbians on our screens?

On September 16, 2023, the actress and comedian Muriel Robin created a buzz by speaking about the invisibility of lesbian actresses in the 7th art during the show What an era! on France 2. When we cannot be penetrated into this society and into cinema: we are worthless! she declared. A statement that is verified when we look at our screens. According to the latest Cinalité report from the 50/50 collective in 2019, only 3% of the main characters in 115 French films are officially homosexual. And 82% of them are men. Gays and lesbians therefore do not seem to be treated equally. There are several reasons for this: firstly because they are men (relations of gender domination also exist in the LGBT community) and then because gays attract the audience of straight women (yes, there are studies on that). Even if counterexamples exist in series, we must also observe artistic productions, theater stages, television productions… Of course, gays must not give up their place: it is rather straight people who must. !
