First Martin Scorsese and Denis Villeneuve, now Ridley Scott. The director has sharply criticized the booming superhero film.

Another directing legend is tough on the superhero genre. Sir Ridley Scott (83), whose latest film “House of Gucci” will be released on December 2nd this year, has in conversation with the US side “Deadline” no good hair left on Marvel and DC movies. In his opinion, most of them are “boring shit” and have lousy scripts.

Once in motion, Scott really pulls off the leather: “Why don’t superhero films have better plots? (…) Most of the time, they only save themselves with special effects.” In his opinion, the best films are carried by their characters, and the myriad of Marvel warriors are simply not good for that.

Other directors agree

As the first director, Martin Scorsese (78) had dealt against the genre. The “Taxi Driver” maker compared comic book adaptations with attractions in amusement parks and found that they were therefore “not a cinema”.

And “Dune” director Denis Villeneuve (54) recently expressed criticism. From “NME” he is quoted as saying: “Perhaps the problem is that we are faced with too many Marvel films that are nothing more than a ‘copy and paste’ of the others.” Villeneuve is even more concerned that “these kinds of films have turned us into zombies”.
