Siri’s voice breaks: How to change the voice of the language assistant

It sounds simple, but many people have no idea that they can change Siri’s voice. As of last year, Apple no longer offers a default setting for its Apple Virtual Assistant for male or female voices. With this, Apple wants to raise our awareness of linguistic bias. NextPit tells you today how quickly you can change Siri’s voice.

Last week my colleague Zois explained in his tutorial how to change the voice of the Google Assistant. The topic was well received in the NextPit community and that’s really no wonder. Voice assistants have long been a great help and a popular feature on our smartphones and other devices.

Today we take care of the iOS faction and tell you how you can change Siri’s voice. In addition, we have another tip for you. With this you can get the language assistant of the iPhone to pronounce your name correctly.

Here’s how to change Siri’s voice in just a few steps

Since iOS 14.5, Siri has mastered new voices and, as already mentioned, is no longer set to the female voice by default. If you set up your new Apple device, you can choose between a female, male and even gender-neutral voice in the initial settings of the iPhone.

The most interesting thing is that once you’ve made your selection, Apple will change Siri’s voice on all devices connected via Apple ID. If you’ve been using your iPhone for a while, chances are you’re still using the female voice as the default. You can change that very easily. Just do the following:

  1. Opens the app settings.
  2. Navigated to Siri & Search.
  3. Choose the option Siri voice.
  4. Here you can choose from the existing voices choose
  5. in section voice you can choose from five different options (in Germany there are only two options).

In English, Apple offers two options for male and female voices as well as one gender-neutral. At least that’s true for those using the beta version of the iOS 15 operating system. To be honest, the gender-neutral voice sounds like a variation of the female voice to my ears. Please let me know your experiences with the gender neutral voice in the comments as I’m curious to hear your thoughts on the matter.

Unfortunately, for languages like French and German, there are currently only two voice options, one male and one female. It is to be hoped that Apple will offer more variants with the announcement of the next version of iOS 15.4 or iOS 16.

This is how Siri pronounces your name correctly

Another very relevant point when talking to a voice assistant is pronouncing your name correctly, right? In contrast to my Greek colleague Zois Bekios, my name is a bit easier to pronounce. However, if Apple’s virtual assistant is having trouble pronouncing your name correctly, you can easily change this:

  1. Opens the Contacts app and choose your profile.
  2. Taps To editand navigate to the option add fieldto the items First name (pronunciation form) and Surname (pronunciation form) to insert
  3. Fill in the fields with the desired pronunciation and saves the changes.

Now Siri can pronounce your name however you wish. Here you can also adjust the pronunciation of other names. Simply follow the instructions above and select the desired contact profile instead of your own name.

That’s it, now you know how to change Siri’s voice on iPhone and customize the pronunciation of your name. Were you already familiar with these two configuration options? And what voice do you use with Siri?
