How about a little more life satisfaction? The Finnish principle called Sisu is supposed to make this possible. You can find out what’s behind it here.

Sisu: The untranslatable word

If you would ask a Finn what sisu exactly means, he would need several German words for the explanation. Because Sisu cannot be translated one-to-one into German. What is meant is one mental qualitythat combines different aspects. Which ones exactly – we will come to that later.

Before that you should know one more thing: An exact translation for Sisu is not only missing in the German language – there is also one for the word not a good match in any other language. And that is exactly what makes this untranslatable term so special! The Finns have thus created a very individual character trait that has now become one national motto has become. And even if Sisu is difficult to translate – one thing is certain: if you internalize Sisu, life is easier. The Finnish mentality reminds us to persevere, not to moan and not to bury your head in the sand if something goes wrong. And it is precisely this kind of thinking that is needed when times of crisis arise. And they can always come!

Sisu: The meaning behind it

As already mentioned, Sisu cannot be clearly translated. But the term can be used rewrite wellso that you get a good feeling for the Finnish motto of life. Sisu stands for a combination of:

  • enjoyment of life
  • Fighting spirit
  • endurance
  • courage
  • Perseverance
  • optimism

Sisu describes a certain inner attitude that is characterized by decisive and responsible action. Do you – without even knowing it – perhaps already live according to the Finnish principle of life?

How much sisu do you have

Do you have Sisu, are you a good problem solver and think action-oriented. Instead of getting lost in worry, you try to approach difficulties rationally. You also have a lot of sisu if you face challenges and conflicts in the first place and don’t run away from them. Bravery and inner strength shape the basic mentality of the Finns.

Do you tend to leave responsibility to others? That speaks for a low Sisu level. Just like the fear of change. Sisu symbolizes progress and perseverance. Anyone who clings to old traditions and leaves little new in their lives would need a good portion of Sisu! The following behavior increases your level of Sisu:

  • Make your own decisions and don’t leave them to others.

  • Be honest with yourself and face your problems.

  • Recognize your personal responsibility and no longer make yourself a victim of your circumstances.

  • Leave your comfort zone – inner strength can only grow through resistance.

  • Exercise patience and perseverance and don’t give up immediately if it becomes uncomfortable.

  • Dare to approach your goals practically and not postpone anything.

  • Stand by your beliefs and hold on to them.

  • Compare yourself less and concentrate more on yourself and your own abilities!

You see: Even if there is no German meaning, Sisu is still meaningful. Especially when you’re going through a tough time. Remember the Finnish mentality – it reminds you of your own strength! In this sense: May Sisu be with you!
