More than 100 people are said to have died. The incident occurred as an aid convoy entered the city.

Dozens of people have died in chaos and gunfire around an aid convoy in the Gaza Strip. It is not clear what exactly happened and how the tragedy occurred.

Different information

The Hamas-controlled health authority accuses Israel’s army of firing into a crowd in the city of Gaza as people waited for aid. 104 people are said to have been killed and 760 injured.

The Israeli army, for its part, said that numerous residents had crowded around arriving trucks with relief supplies in order to loot them.

Dozens of people were killed and injured as a result of jostling and trampling. According to Israeli information, people were also run over by the trucks.

The information provided by both sides cannot currently be independently verified.

Rush towards the aid convoy

Several Israeli media outlets reported, citing army sources, that some of the crowd, for an undisclosed reason, eventually approached the Israeli soldiers who were coordinating the import of the trucks, thereby endangering them. That’s why the soldiers opened fire on the group.

Citing the army, it was also reported that armed Palestinians had fired on some of the trucks.

The Times of Israel reported that around 30 trucks arrived on the coast of Gaza early Thursday morning. Thousands of Palestinians ran towards the vans. The army released a video supposedly showing the onslaught.

Catastrophic situation in Gaza

One thing is certain: the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is becoming increasingly precarious; aid organizations are calling it catastrophic. According to UN figures, the amount of aid delivered in February was halved compared to January.

According to the United Nations, a quarter of the population in the Gaza Strip is now starving. Aid organizations complain that it has become almost impossible to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip.

This is because coordination with the Israeli army is so difficult and because Hamas and the army are fighting everywhere. Israel, for its part, complains that Hamas and criminal gangs are stealing the aid – for themselves or to sell on the black market.

Either way: after almost five months of war, it is clear that public order is collapsing – especially when people are starving. The USA also today once again emphatically called for more aid deliveries for the trapped population in the Gaza Strip.
