six missing in Gard

Six people, including two children, are missing in Gard, swept away by floods while trying to cross bridges by car during the night from Saturday to Sunday, according to a new report Sunday morning from the prefecture.

A father and his two children aged 4 and 13 were taken away from Dions, north of Nmes, around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, and two other people from Goudargues, in the north of the department, on Sunday around 5:00 a.m., Frédric said during a press briefing. A motorist was already missing on Saturday evening in Gagnières, still in the north of the department.

In Dions, the occupants of the vehicle were able to call for help after going onto the bridge. The mother, a 40-year-old woman who was also in the car, was found by rescuers and was taken to hospital, he said.

The motorist, already missing on Saturday evening, was also swept away while trying to cross a bridge around 7:45 p.m. in Gagnires. It concerns a 62-year-old motorist. The other occupant of the car managed to get out of the vehicle and took refuge in a tree, before being taken care of by the firefighters.

Gard had been placed on orange flood alert by Mto-France due to the episode of very heavy precipitation linked to storm Monica which swept across a large quarter of the south-east of France.
