The USA have to complain about a rampage at a school: At Rigby Middle School in Idaho state, a girl shot to death on Thursday. She injured two classmates and a caretaker. Before anything worse could happen, however, the math teacher Krista Gneiting intervened – and thus became the heroine of the day.
The sixth grader is said to have taken a pistol out of her school backpack around 9 a.m. and fired wildly. She met the caretaker Jim Wilson and two classmates, as reported by US media. Students and teachers ran for their lives – except for one: Krista Gneiting. The teacher fearlessly overpowered the armed girl, took the pistol from her and held it until the police arrived.
Schoolchildren on amok in police custody
Where the girl got the gun from and what motivated her to do this is still unclear. The police have not yet revealed their identity. The student is in police custody.
Caretaker Wilson and the two wounded students were not critically injured, confirms the chief doctor of the Eastern Idaho Regional Hospital. They suffered all three limb injuries. While the caretaker was released after the first treatment, the two students stayed overnight in the hospital for observation – one of them may need a surgical procedure.
“When my teacher went to look, he found blood”
Pictures of the incident show emotional scenes: parents and students in each other’s arms. Numerous police officers securing the school grounds. Twelve-year-old Yandel Rodriguez was in class when the first shots rang out. He describes the anxious moments: “Suddenly I heard a loud noise. And then two more loud noises. When my teacher went to look, he found blood. “
Fatal shootings occur again and again in the USA – this year alone there have been numerous incidents: In March, supermarket shooter Ahmad Alissa (21) shot and killed ten people in Colorado and Robert Aaron Long (21) killed eight people in massage parlors during April a dispute with eight people was killed at the parcel delivery company Fedex.
In order to avoid such incidents in the future, US President Joe Biden has already announced a tightening of the gun law. (ouch)
