GDDR7 constitutes one of the challenges of the next generation of graphics cardswhether from AMD, Intel or NVIDIA.

Throughout 2023, and even partly at the start of this year, we have discussed the progress on GDDR7 of the main players in the video memory market.

Today, one after the other, these players are preparing for the actual launch of this new generation memory, which must equip the next AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards.

Micron at the end of 2024, SK Hynix at the beginning of 2025

Only a few days ago, Micron announced the sampling of its GDDR7 memory, subsequently mentioning, but without great precision, the provision of its memory on “ the second half of 2024 “.

Of course, Micron was rave about the qualities of its GDDR7 chips, with “ over 1.5 TB/s of system bandwidth, up to 60% more bandwidth than GDDR6, and four independent channels to optimize workloads “.

Quite surprisingly, however, Micron could not (or would not) be clearer about its launch schedule. A little behind its American competitor, SK Hynix is therefore playing the precision card.

Up to 40 Gbps bandwidth?

Like its competitors, the South Korean firm plans to launch GDDR7 capable of reaching 28 to 32 Gbps for the first generation of commercialized chips, but is already targeting 40 Gbps.

During Computex, SK Hynix also highlighted samples of its chips, and with Micron and Samsung, it was among the most active in the segment. It is also in Taipei that our colleagues fromAnandTech have had confirmation of the mass production window envisaged by SK Hynix.

SK Hynix is not targeting 2024, but the first quarter of 2025. A date a little less vague than that of Micron, but which raises the question of the release of new generation graphics cards. Obviously, these will have to wait until GDDR7 is widely produced to be marketed.

Having fallen into video games at a time when it took a great imagination to see here a football match, there a tank fight in these few bars represented on the screen, I have followed all the developments for forty years. Loyal to the PC, but a fan of all genres, I only have trouble with JRPGs. Otherwise, from the driest turn-based strategy to the most spectacular FPS, including sports simulations or musical games, I can do it all... with a preference for management and games combining several styles. My video game pantheon would consist of three series: Elite, Civilization and Max Payne.
