Ski tour in Pinzgau – Two injured after an avalanche in Pinzgau

An avalanche caught a group of three tourers from Pinzgau (48, 53, 55) on Saturday at the Riegelkopf near Mittersill. Two men were buried up to their heads. The third athlete was able to free the two injured Pinzgauers with other tourers.

The incident happened at 1,870 meters above sea level, and the experienced Pinzgauer got off lightly. The trio was heading towards the Riegelkopf in the Amertal valley head in the morning hours. After about an hour of walking, the slab of snow came loose and buried a 48-year-old and a 53-year-old Pinzgauer. Since the 55-year-old companion was not buried, he was able to quickly start alerting and salvaging. Both victims were injured, the 53-year-old had to be flown to the hospital with the rescue helicopter. A total of 16 mountain rescuers, two rescue helicopters and the police helicopter with two Alpine police officers were deployed.
