The ski tourers fell through the collapsed snow cover.
ask On Saturday morning, three ski tourers fell into a crevasse above the “Ewigschneefäld” on the Aletsch Glacier. As the Valais canton police announced, one of the three victims could only be recovered dead. The victim is a 28-year-old woman from Bern. The two other victims – a 27 and a 28-year-old from the canton of Bern – were flown to the hospital by helicopter with injuries.
According to the cantonal police, there were five of the victims. The group was divided into a team of two and a team of three. The five ski tourers stopped at 3,600 meters above sea level when the snow cover suddenly collapsed beneath them.
The two people in the group of two, including the 28-year-old from Bern, fell about 25 meters into a crevasse. An alpinist from the group of three also fell, but his companions were able to arrest the fall. The public prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation.
