What does the skin microbiome do?

These billions of tiny bacteria roam and cohabit on our skin from the moment our mother transmits them to us, during childbirth. They are of course invisible to the naked eye and will evolve throughout our lives. So why pay attention to it? First, they serve to protect the skin by acting as a small barrier against the sun, pollution or even skin diseases.

If we neglect this particularity of the human body that is the skin microbiome, bad bacteria can come and lodge there much more easily, as explained by doctor and specialist Jérémy Lupu. “What is scientifically proven is that the skin microbiome, when it is out of balance, induces inflammation. This inflammation results in flare-ups of these inflammatory diseases, when one is predisposed to have them, that is- that is to say acne, or what is called atopic dermatitis, eczema, which is rather present in children, in the little ones”, he explains, continuing: “All these diseases- there, indeed, they are dependent on the state of our skin and in particular on the state of our microbiota or our microbiome.”

How to take care of it?

If you clean your face as soon as a small drop of sweat emanates from it, forget about it immediately! Yes, you will remove the dirt, but you will also remove the good bacteria. Next, be sure to use a pH-neutral cleanser, ideally. The skin is at a pH between five and six and if, for example, you use Marseille soap, which has a pH of ten, you will strip your skin and thus drive out all good bacteria.

Also very important, avoid bringing your fingers to your face too often, because bad bacteria reside there. Finally, a healthy lifestyle is also essential for healthy skin: protect yourself from stress and avoid a diet that is too fatty or too sweet.
