Microsoft-owned Skype literally has a zoom feature – not of course to be confused with Zoom, the company that has eclipsed Skype for video calling for the past two years.
Skype’s new zoom in feature aims to help users when someone is sharing a screen with pictures too small to see. Skype users can now zoom in using the mouse or screen controls to adjust the size of the shared screen. Users can zoom in at will, without disrupting the meeting.
To use the zoom in feature, Windows users can press CTRL and + Where CTRL and use mouse scrolling. On Macs, this is Cmd and +, Where cmd and the mouse. It is also possible to use the touchpad of the laptop to zoom in. There are similar zoom controls in Teams for shared screens.
Skype interface revamped
Skype, whose development as a mainstream app seems to have been eclipsed by Teams, recently reiterated that it is alive and well, revealing a revamped interface.
Over the past few months, Skype has gotten lean versions of the Teams features that Microsoft has been expanding throughout the pandemic to catch up with Zoom. Skype now has a grid view with up to 10 simultaneous video and audio streams, a large gallery view with up to 49 video streams, Ensemble mode and Speaker view.
Microsoft also recently introduced a new view selector, a grid icon at the top left of the screen, which makes it easier to switch views than by delving into settings.
This same display change icon is now available in Skype, as explained in a support article. The display switcher is available on Skype for desktops and mobile devices. However, the grid view is limited to less than nine participants on some mobile devices.
New filters for contacts
As part of its efforts to modernize the look of Skype, the team introduced new ways to filter contacts, with “All”, “My Contacts” and “Only Active Contacts”.
The Skype team also fixed several issues, including one that caused the app to crash after ending calls, fail to initiate chat notification on iPhone, and a bug that caused a refresh on of attempting to add funds to a non-empty account on Windows devices.
The new features started rolling out last week, according to Microsoft.
