Sly Cooper: Towards a return of the PlayStation license? Clues point in this direction!

Launched in 2002 with Sly Raccoon, the Sly Cooper franchise was then entitled to three episodes by Sucker Punch Productions then a fourth, Sly Cooper: Thieves Through Time, produced this time by Sanzaru Games and released on PS3 and Vita. In this platform game, you play as Sly Cooper, a burglar raccoon and his sidekicks Bentley and Murray. Since then, there has been a scarcity for fans who despair of one day witnessing the return of the thief. Well, this return could be announced this year.

An announcement in September?

It should be noted first of all that this information comes from insiders, so it should be taken with reserve. Few months ago, Nick Baker, speaker at Xbox Era, reportedly got confirmation that a new Sly Cooper game was in development. The announcement of course revived the hopes of fans who were quick to ask him when the confirmation would arrive.

He said in his latest podcast that he doesn’t believe any announcements related to the new Sly Cooper – which is expected to be a PlayStation 5 exclusive – will arrive next month in June. In recent days, rumors have swirled around suggesting that Sony may be hosting a new State of Play-like event later this month. However, even if it does come to fruition, Baker said he doesn’t think Sly Cooper 5, or whatever that new installment is called, will be announced at this time. Instead, he said it should be announced at a later date in 2022.

Earlier this spring, another insider, Account NGT, shared similar details and said PlayStation wouldn’t reveal anything related to Sly Cooper until the second half of 2022.

This same Insider even gave a layer of it by saying that the game should be announced later in the year. Even though Sony hasn’t yet put forward a date for a future State of Play or PlayStation 5 Showcase, the second half of the year and more particularly the month of September seems to be the opportune time for the company. Another clue that stirs up hopes, the game would not be developed by Sucker Punch, but by Pixel Opus, another Sony-owned studio that is currently working on a PS5 exclusive.

Perfect timing?

Playing on the nostalgia of players is often a winning bet. The release of a fifth opus of the license would take place 10 years after Sly Cooper: Thieves through time (if we expect a release in 2023), and we know that publishers are fond of anniversary dates. It would not be a remake or even a remaster, but rather a sequel – which is much more attractive. What’s more, Sly 4 has a secret ending
where we discover Sly lost in Egypt
. A perfect start to the scenario for a sequel and, what’s more, would finally bring answers to the fans.

Although the series officially ended in 2013, many side projects were mentioned, but never materialized. We can think of the film which, although long announced, was finally canceled in 2016 to switch to the series format – which has also been stalled for years.

Proof of this is that more than 20 years after the release of the first opus, the fans are still there. It would therefore not be surprising if Sony relaunched the machine.

While there is only a month left before the arrival in Europe of the new PlayStation Plus subscriptions, here is that one of the behemoths of the PS1 has unfortunately already leaked. Back to childhood, or not, with moving reunions.
