The Sandisk iXpand Flash Drive should be the ideal solution for many small iPhone and iPad owners to make room. n-tv.de has tried how well the little stick strikes in everyday life

If you want to save money when buying an iPhone or iPad, you have to do without a large internal memory. For example, the iPhone XS costs about 1150 euros with 64 gigabytes (GB), for the device with 256 GB 1320 euros are due. There is not a version with 128 GB, the 512 GB model costs 1550 euros. However, 64 GB is very little if you take a lot of photos and videos. To get along with it, you either have to buy iCloud storage or backup the data regularly on the computer. But especially on the road that is not very practical. The better solution could be Sandisk’s small memory stick iXPand Flash Drive. n-tv.de has tried it.

The stick is stable and secure.

The design has managed the manufacturer well. The elastic stick bends from the connector to the back and is on the back of the iPhone with a plastic knob, in which the Lightning connector disappears during transport. As a result, the Flash Drive sits firmly and securely and does not protrude too far out of the iPhone. The USB-A-end unfortunately has no cap, so you should not have any crumbs in your pocket.

Automatic backups

To use the stick, you have to install the app. Not only does it allow you to move or copy files to external storage. It also allows automatic or manual backup of photos and videos from internal storage and social media. You can also save your contacts and calendar entries. If you have automatic backup enabled, the app syncs the memory as soon as you plug the stick. You can easily interrupt the process, after the break the backup will continue. Prima: Important files can be stored password-protected in a special folder.

With USB 3.0 the iXpand Flash Drive is quite fast on the way. The stick does not set any speed records, but it is fast enough for the iPhone everyday life. On an iPhone XS Max around 800 photos with a total size of almost 4.5 GB were copied to the flash drive in just under ten minutes. On a PC with a USB 3.0 port, the recordings were then transferred in less than two minutes. Cool is that you can stream photos, videos or music directly from an Amazon Stick or Chromecast device. It is also possible to start the camera from the app and record images without detour on the stick.

Compact and easy

The bottom line is that the Sandisk iXpand Flash Drive is an easy way to quickly and easily back up photos, videos, and other files when your internal storage space is tight. He also convinces with useful extras. With around 35 euros for the 32 GB version or 40 euros for the 64 GB model, the stick is also relatively inexpensive. The app makes it easy for the user and the flash drive is small and stable enough to be always there. Sandisk could have given him a carry case or at least a protective cap.

Incidentally, the manufacturer also has similar flash memory for Android devices. With them, the two plugs disappear in the case, but they are not as stable on the device as the iXpand. The Dual Drive USB Type-C is available with 32 GB from 15 euros, the Sandisk Ultra Dual Drive m3.0 for devices with micro-USB port is available from 10 euros.
